These are the lecture notes of a seminar on semi-simple Lie algebras and root systems, held at the Free University of Brussels in 1963--64. The authors start from scratch, present the standard results on Lie algebras, give a classification of spherical, euclidean and hyperbolic root systems, and end up with an existence proof for Chevalley bases.
