Summary: In this short note we announce the main results of \textit{M. Bonafini} et al. [SIAM J. Math. Anal. 50, No. 6, 6307--6332 (2018; Zbl 1404.49006)] about variational problems involving 1-dimensional connected sets in the Euclidean plane, such as for example the Steiner tree problem and the irrigation (Gilbert-Steiner) problem.
