This paper provides a very general notion of composition for components of distributed systems models. The core motivation is to obtain a monoid of model components, i.e., an associative composition operator. The key for obtaining this result is to distinguish two interfaces for each component, called left and right interface, respectively, rather than a single interface, as usual. This way, unintentional identification of interface elements with equal names is avoided.
