The authors introduce the concept of a higher algebroid generalizing the notions of an algebroid and a higher tangent bundle. This generalization is based on a description of Lie algebroids as vector bundle comorphisms, that is, a special kind of differential relation. In this new approach higher algebroids are vector bundle comorphism between graded-linear bundles satisfying natural axioms. The authors provide natural and basic examples and discuss some applications in geometric mechanics.
