It is well-known that a linear ordinary differential equation can always be reduced by a point transformation to the normal form \[ y^{(n)}+A^2_ny^{(n-2)}+\dots=0 \] in which the coefficient of the term of second highest order is zero. In this work, by using the symmetry generators for such equations with maximal symmetry, is studied the existence and determination of variational and divergence symmetry algebras as well the first integrals.
