The paper deals with the existence of solutions to a Neumann boundary value problem of the form \[ -u''+u=\lambda f(x,u), \quad u'(0)=u'(1)=0. \] By applying a variational technique (which does not include limiting values of the response function), the authors provide sufficient conditions for the problem to have positive solutions in a pre-specified annulus or a disc. Some corollaries refer to special cases.
