The following main result is obtained. Theorem 4. The group \(\langle a,t\mid t^2at^{-2}=a^2\rangle\) is residually finite but not linear. -- Examples of non-linear ascending HNN-extensions of linear groups are constructed. Three unsolved problems are formulated.
