The author develops an abstract approach to variational refinement of closed (periodic) curves that meet arbitrary convex constraints. Using closed-periodic piecewise linear (B-spline) curves he combines the abstract spline theory with near-interpolatory refinement techniques. The characterization, existence and uniqueness of the solutions are investigated in a general framework, and it is applied to the discretized thin beam and interval weighted splines.
