A simple new proof is presented for a recurrence relation of the even and odd characteristic polynomials of real symmetric Toeplitz matrices which was originally introduced by \textit{A. Melman} [SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl. 25, No. 4, 947--963 (2004; Zbl 1065.65055)]. This relation is the basis of a symmetry exploiting method for computing smallest eigenvalues.
