Here the author studies the postulation of codimension 3 ACM subschemes of \(\mathbb P^N\). She uses a result of Macaulay which describes all Hilbert functions of the quotients of a polynomial ring. Iterating the number of variables, she obtains a new form of the growth of these functions. A key tool is the elementary bilinkage introduced by R. Hartshorne. In the first part of this paper she also unifies several different approaches in the codimension two case.
