The maximality of Conway's sporadic simple group \(C_1\) in the simple orthogonal group \(O^+(24,2)\) can be shown directly, but is here proved using CFSG. The method essentially is to observe that no finite simple group has an order which is compatible with lying strictly between the two groups.
