The purpose of this paper is to establish equivalent characterizations of an essentially ejective set in the sense of \textit{M. Laczkovich} and \textit{I. Z. Ruzsa} [Real Anal. Exch. 22, No. 1, 153--167 (1996; Zbl 0879.28027)]. The authors prove that a compact subset \(H\) of a compact commutative topological group is essentially ejective if and only if \(H\) is not a weak Dirichlet set if and only if \(H\) satisfies a condition that uses difference functions.
