The author shows that there is a simply connected closed manifold homeomorphic to but not diffeomorphic to \(\mathbb CP^{2}\#7\overline{\mathbb CP} ^{2}.\) This shows that \(\mathbb CP^{2}\#8\overline{\mathbb CP}^{2}\)has at least three distinct smooth structures.
