The author studies expansions of real numbers with respect to a base \(q>1\) with general finite digit sets. In case \(q\) is an integer or a Pisot number, greedy automata recognising constructions are presented. Generalizing a result of \textit{Z. Daróczy} and \textit{I. Kátai} [Publ. Math. 46, No. 3--4, 385--408 (1985; Zbl 0874.11013)], real numbers with unique representation are characterized. Also, periodicity of representations is investigated in a general setting.
