Most of previous papers on partial differential algebraic equations (PDAEs) deal with classes of solutions which are smooth in space. The present paper studies linear PDAEs within the framework of weak solutions, that is, the authors consider the PDAEs as abstract differential algebraic equations within suitable function spaces of Sobolev-type. Based on the obtained weak formulation the suitable index theory is developed.
