The paper presents a brief review of works which study the causes of changes in the observed orbital period in close binary stellar systems. The knowledge of the period change in close binaries is based on the observations of eclipsing variable stars. The general causes of the period change are a motion of the periastron line, the light-time effect, and the presence of a third body. The paper includes a list of 64 references.
