The book ``Character theory of finite groups'' by Y. G. Berkovich, L. S. Kazarin and E. M. Zhmud' is written in 2 volumes with together 27 chapters. Volume 1 [Zbl 1426.20002] contains 11 chapters and Volume 2 contains Chapters 12--27. In the preface to volume 2, the contents of Volume 1 is described in details as well as contents of Volume 2. The topics covered in both volumes are based on recent research on the subject of character theory of finite groups. Although the authors concentrate mostly on applications of character theory, pure theoretical questions are discussed in many parts of the book. Many exercises are compiled at the end of the book and are of varying degree of difficulty, including open problems. The book under review and its Volume 1, can be regarded as a complement of the previously written books on the subject of character theory by \textit{I. M. Isaacs} [Character theory of finite groups. New York-San Francisco-London: Academic Press, a subsidiary of Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, Publishers. (1976; Zbl 0337.20005)], \textit{B. Huppert} [Character theory of finite groups. Berlin: Walter de Gruyter (1998; Zbl 0932.20007)], \textit{W. Feit} [The representation theory of finite groups. Amsterdam - New York - Oxford: North-Holland Publishing Company. (1982; Zbl 0493.20007)], \textit{L. Dornhoff} [Group representation theory (in 2 parts). Part A: Ordinary representation theory. Marcel Dekker, Inc., New York, NY (1971; Zbl 0227.20002); Group representation theory (in 2 parts). Part B: Modular representation theory. Marcel Dekker, Inc., New York, NY (1972; Zbl 0236.20004)] and \textit{M. J. Collins} [Representations and characters of finite groups. Cambridge etc.: Cambridge University Press (1990; Zbl 0703.20001)]. Certain chapters of the books may be chosen for an advanced course in character theory, although the books serve as a comprehensive reference for graduate students and researchers.
