The author suggests new variational approach for generalized solutions to systems of conservation laws \(U_t+F(U)_x=0\). He introduces integral functionals acting on the set of paths \((x(\tau),U(\tau))\) and describes their extremal properties in the variational framework. Based on the proposed approach, the author outlines a strategy to prove existence of generalized solutions.
