On a conjecture of Stanley on Jack symmetric functions (Q1801700)

In this short paper the author solves affirmatively a conjecture by Stanley concerning Jack symmetric functions. This conjecture, being the first one among a collection of related conjectures, relates a particular Jack function to a sum of Schur functions; it is solved by an explicit calculation based on Young tableaux, and combinatorial identities involving binomial coefficients. In the introduction the author mentions a connection to hypergeometric series, but this connection is left unexplained in the paper.
