On periodic compact groups (Q1802332)

Under the assumption that there are finitely many finite simple sporadic groups an affirmative answer is given to the following problem due to V. P. Platonov: whether a torsion compact group is locally finite. Moreover it is proved that an infinite compact group contains an infinite abelian subgroup.
