The authors have explored an interesting application of one of the vertex operators from the representations of Kac-Moody algebras to the theory of symmetric functions. A number of recurrence formulae for plethysm coefficients has been obtained in the paper. Some of them are generalizations of well-known ones, others are supplied with new proofs.
