A Steiner loop is a commutative finite loop \(L\) with the property: \(y(yx) = x\) for all \(y\), \(x\) in \(L\). The authors study properties of Steiner loops and determine possible orders of their centers. As a consequence they get an example saying that one cannot carry over the group-theoretic Lagrange theorem to the context of Steiner loops.
