In the usual boundary element formulation based on the collocation method a residual definition of error indicators and estimators is used to define the adaptive hierarchical method with respect to the \(p\)-version and the \(h\)-version based on linear and parabolic functions. The associated advantages are discussed. From the numerical experiments it is claimed that using \(p\)- or \(h\)-adaptive techniques a rapid convergence is achieved.
