The authors propose a new method to estimate the a posteriori error for the boundary element method. The differences between the solutions obtained by using the direct regular method without singular integral and the usual boundary element solutions are taken as the error indicator for adaptive meshing. A new \(hr\)-version of adaptive meshing is also proposed without increasing the total element number. The accuracy and convergence of the solutions are improved. The method is applied to the stress concentration problem and the crack problem and the numerical results support the claim.
