The authors present a lengthy and thorough analysis of the thermo- mechanical mechanism underlying shear band formation in polycrystalline metals deforming at high loading rates. Part I establishes the basic framework, while part II introduces the effects of inertia, diffusion and dissipation, and defines inertia number, diffusion number and dissipation number. These are presented for selected engineering materials based on experimental evidence.
