The optimum design of composite laminated plates under stiffness and gauge conditions is considered. Two criteria (plate weight and strain energy) are taken into account, but they are composed summing them with weights. The feasible region is defined by means of bounds for design variables and restriction of structural deformation. The derivatives of the objective and constraint functions are obtained analytically. A mathematical programming algorithm based on variable metric method is used. A numerical example is discussed.
