The authors consider linear ordinary differential operators and their adjoints. In particular, let \(L_1\) and \(L_2\) be second-order linear differential operators. Let \(L= L_1L_2\) be the product operator. Then necessary and sufficient conditions are given that \(L\) be formally selfadjoint.
