A method introduced by \textit{H. Nisitani} [in Numerical methods in fracture mechanics Proc. 1st int. Conf., Swansea 1978, 67-80 (1978; Zbl 0423.73068)], has been modified by the authors [in Fujitani, Yoshinobu (ed.) et al., Modelling, computation and analysis in fracture mechanics. Proceedings of a seminar, held at Ube City, Yamaguchi, Japan in July 1993. Tokyo: Kinokuniya. Lect. Notes Numer. Appl. Anal. 13, 133-154 (1994; Zbl 0805.73054)], and here this method is applied to the example of two elliptical holes under longitudinal shear loading. Some fundamental difficulties relating to the original method and stated in the introduction, have apparently not been resolved through extensive numerical calculations.
