This paper deals with an explicit method for computing the sequence of lap numbers \(\ell(f^k)\) and the sequence of numbers of periodic points (of negative and critical type) in arbitrary intervals \([a,b]\). The authors obtain the results of \textit{J. W. Milnor} and \textit{W. P. Thurston} [Lect. Notes Math. 1342, 465-563 (1988; Zbl 0664.58015)] using a functional approach to kneading theory.
