The author discusses the role of several mathematicians of the sixteenth century in studying and making available the work of Diophantus, with particular attention to Johannes Regiomontanus (1436-1476), Petrus Ramus (1515-1572), Joachim Camerarius the Elder (1500-1574), Raffael Bombelli (1526-1572) and Wilhem Holtzmann (Xylander) (1532-1576). Camerarius published, in 1569, a work in which he discussed manuscripts of Diophantus found in the Vatican library. In 1575, Holtzman published the first edition of Diophantus' work in Latin, updating the notation and providing a commentary.
