This paper is a continuation of previous papers of the author on the subject ``Norm-ideal perturbations of Hilbert space operators'' [cf. J. Oper. Theory 2, 3-37 (1979; Zbl 0446.47003) and ibid. 5, 77-100 (1981; Zbl 0483.46036)]. It contains various general results on the existence of quasi-central approximate units (relation to commutators, unbounded Fredholm modules, filtrations, maximality of the Macaev ideal, etc.) as well as some results for specific examples (non-commutative tori, certain discrete groups, etc.).
