A first-order partial differential equation is considered on a closed Riemannian manifold. An analytic condition is given under which a solution with smooth initial conditions loses its smoothness after a period of time which is estimated in the paper. The system has a meaning as a model in meteorology; in that context the breakdown of smoothness is interpreted as the formation of an atmospheric front.
