The authors explore the limitations forced on the infinity type of a cohomological automorphic representation given the nonvanishing of an associated period over a generalized modular symbol. Some general formulas are presented followed by the example of \(\text{GL} (2n)\) over a totally real field. The cases of \(n=3\) and 4 are treated in detail.
