The author generalizes a result of \textit{M. Culler}, \textit{C. McA. Gordon}, \textit{J. Luecke} and \textit{P. B. Shalen} [Ann. Math., II. Ser. 125, 237-300 (1987; Zbl 0633.57006)] on irreducible 3-manifolds with a single torus boundary and Betti number 1, (e.g. knot complements in the 3-sphere), to irreducible 3-manifolds not containing any closed essential surface and having \(n\) tori as boundary. The result delimits the manifolds which can result from Dehn surgery (disc attachments) along a set of \(m<n+1\) boundary curves on the tori.
