The authors present a general procedure for constructing subgrid models to be used as coarse grid where the smallest scales are not resolved. The objective is to find models that accurately reproduce the effect of subgrid scales and that in some sense are similar to the original differential operator. The method is based on multiresolution analysis with wavelet projection and approximation of the discrete operator [cf. \textit{M. Dorobantu} and \textit{E. Engquist}, Wavelet-based numerical homogenization, SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 35, No.~2, 540-559 (1998)].
