Some solutions of partial differential equations (PDE) are surfaces which are important in the design of the object which is studied. Such solutions are generally approximated by finite element methods. Nevertheless for the exchange of data between different computer-aided design (CAD) systems, it is interesting to obtain an approximation in the form of a B-spline surface. This paper studies the accuracy of such B-spline finite element approximations to PDE surfaces and illustrates its results by the example of a blend between a cylinder and an inclined plane. The presentation is clear and nicely illustrated. The paper contains few mathematics and is mainly directed to users.
