A likelihood ratio procedure is proposed for concluding whether the expectations of two unpaired variates are linearly related in the case where they are linked to one another through a third independent variable. The procedure turns out to be related to the least significant of two t-statistics, it is motivated by, and applied to a numerical example involving lead concentration, mutation frequency and distance from lead source.
