This paper examines the efficiency of a set of linear algebra subprograms, commonly referred to as the BLAS, as standard available on a CDC CYBER 205. We have written an alternative BLAS implementation. The performance of both implementations on a 1-pipe CYBER 205 is compared and suggestions for improvements with respect to the CDC BLAS are given. Special attention is paid to operations on non-contiguously stored vector elements, leading to so-called stride problems. In this paper, we only consider the single precision real and complex BLAS for vectors with positive strides.
