Symmetric difference schemes of second and fourth order for an eigenvalue problem of a symmetric fourth order ordinary differential operator with two-point boundary conditions are considered. The paper is a slight modification of the paper of \textit{M. Chawla} [IMA J. Numer. Anal. 3, 291- 293 (1983; Zbl 0518.65059)] and the first author's paper [Int. J. Math. Math. Sci. 137-143 (1986; Zbl 0599.65057)].
