In this paper a kinematic definition of twinning connected with a suitable notion of material symmetry for the constitutive equations of a crystalline solid is proposed. An explicit algebraic rule for constructing the elements of a specific group for simple monoatomic crystals and for a given twinning mode is presented. The definition of twinning for simple monoatomic crystals is extended to complex crystals as well.
