The present paper examines the problem of a penny-shaped flaw which is located in the plane of an external crack in an isotropic elastic solid. The penny-shaped flaw is subjected to uniform internal pressure. The paper develops power series representations for the stress intensity factors at the boundary of the penny-shaped flaw and at the perimeter of the externally cracked region. These series representations are in terms of a non-dimensional parameter which is the ratio of the radius of the penny-shaped flaw to the radius of the externally cracked region.
