Nonlinear diffraction of water waves by offshore structures (Q1820043)

The complete set of equations of motion for a non-symmetric water wave problem is derived from a variational formulation. The analytical results of nonlinear diffraction of water waves by off-shore cylindrical structures are reviewed. The discussion on water waves incident on a circular harbor with a narrow gap raises the question whether or not the circular harbor is a Helmholtz resonator for nonlinear water waves. On large conical structures the wave forces including the second order effects are calculated. The authors hope that some of the results may be experimentally verified.
