This paper presents a systematic development of existence, uniqueness and regularity theorems for compressible jets and cavities. Both axially symmetric and planar (symmetric and asymmetric) cases are considered. The results are obtained by a variational method that has already led the authors to a number of striking successes in the study of incompressible flows with free boundary.
