This paper reviews some recent mathematical results concerning the low, finite-dimensional behaviour of the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equations describing thermal-diffusive flame front instabilities. It is shown how these partial differential equations are equivalent to a finite dynamical system. An introduction is also provided to the study of so-called multiplicity phenomena in flames induced by the chemical kinetics of the system.
