Introducing a smooth factor which can control the trade-off between the closeness of fit and smoothness of fit, the author [IMA J. Numer. Anal. 1, 267-283 (1981; Zbl 0469.65006)] has described an algorithm for surface fitting by tensor product splines over a rectangle. However, the user has to specify a rectangular domain on which the approximation is to be determined. This is inconvenient in applications with nonrectangular approximation domains. In the present paper the author extends the foregoing algorithm for surface fitting over a circle by tensor product splines satisfying certain boundary conditions.
