A constitutive inequality proposed by several authors is applied, apparently for the first time, to a nonassociated elastic/plastic constitutive model. The main mathematical difficulty ensues from the presence of a nonsymmetric dyadic matrix in the constitutive equations. A general property of such products is used to derive a simple sufficient condition for the constitutive inequality. This condition involves the hardening modulus and the spectral condition number of a matrix arising from the constitutive equations. Several examples are given.
