It is shown that certain pairwise balanced designs can be embedded in a projective plane. It follows that if the projective plane conjecture is true, the conjecture of \textit{P. Erdős} and \textit{J. Larson} [Ann. Discrete Math. 15, 129-134 (1982; Zbl 0499.05014)] will be false.
