Deformations on patterns, such as substitutions, deletions, and insertions, are extended to be positionally dependent. The deformation of a primitive depends not only on its type, but also on its position. Concepts of contextual preserved deformations (CPD) and contextual variant deformations (CVD) are proposed, as well as algorithms for optimal pattern matching under CPD and CVD conditions.
