The author comments on two of his earlier papers [J. Math. Kyoto Univ. 25, 597-617 (1985; Zbl 0597.30056); ibid. 27, 507-530 (1987; Zbl 0641.30037)] giving a refinement of a fundamental variational formula in the second which provides improvements of other formulas there and given another proof of a theorem in the first. He also applies it to obtain several other variations.
