René Thom is well-known as one of the originators of differential topology. This delightful article tells the story of Thom's remarkable early work, starting with his first paper on a refinement of Morse theory, followed by his work related to cobordism theory (Thom isomorphism, transversality, definition and determination of cobordism rings), and setting the stage for his later work on singularities of smooth mappings. Indeed, one learns that Thom's published works give only a partial idea of his great creativity and influence on the development of differential topology.
